Education

I have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In addition to this BS degree, I have an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Automation Technologies from RIT. Aside from these degrees, I have obtained education at Ohlone College prior to my attendance at RIT.

Experience

I am born and have grown up Deaf. I can communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) with various Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. In addition to these people, I can communicate in ASL with Deafblind people. During my time as a student enrolled at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, I weekly met a few students and helped them with their ASL courses. I signed words and sentences to these students when they asked me questions. I fingerspelled or wrote words on sheets of paper and asked the students to sign these words. After I have graduated from RIT, I have earned three years of professional experience at two federal agencies. At one of these federal agencies, I have participated in ASL courses by one-on-one signing words and sentences to tutees and by having these tutees copy these words and sentences in ASL. Aside from my previous experience with ASL, I have met tutors at Ohlone College and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for help with my homework assignments for Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Differential Equations courses, so I have gained math tutoring strategies from these tutors and from my effort to tutor students at RIT. With these math tutoring strategies, I can tutor math. In fact, I see Sharon Rasmussen, a faculty member of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID)’s physics support team, as a role model for tutoring math. If I tutor math, I can sign in ASL and can write steps to solutions on sheets of paper in front of tutees. I can make sure that these solutions are right by looking at solutions in either manuals or the back of textbooks. I am an outstanding Sign Language tutor because I have taken two semesters of American Sign Language (ASL) courses in high school, because I have tutored several tutees in ASL for two years, and because I can explain how signs and sentence structure form. In fact, I got grades of A for both of the semesters of the ASL courses. Because I am Deaf, I am strong with visual communication. For example, I can easily spot mistakes made by tutees. I can provide ASL lessons in the alphabet, common signs, visual description, classifiers, sentence structure, facial expression, body language, specialized signs, and ethical or professional relationships with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. Aside from tutoring ASL, I am an outstanding Math tutor because I have taken various math courses in high school, Ohlone College, and RIT and because I know how to use my knowledge gained from these courses to tutor. My 11th-grade math teacher said that I was the top student in one class. I got grades of A for two semesters of the Pre-Calculus course in my 12th grade. My teacher for the first part of the Calculus series during my first year at Ohlone College was surprised at my ability to solve a project problem while the rest of my classmates were being unable to solve this project problem. In fact, I got a grade of A for this first part of the Calculus series. As for providing assistance, I have explained how to simplify an equation to a student and have discussed solutions to math problems with classmates. As for my knowledge of Algebra 2, I know how to add exponents, to group like terms, to solve logarithms, to put a function in another function, and to graph a function. As for my knowledge of Trigonometry, I know how to find angles, to calculate lengths of sides of polygons, to use proportionality, to change degrees to radians, to identify corresponding angles, to place symbols on polygons, and to graph cosine and sine functions. As for my knowledge of Pre-Calculus, I know how to use the Law of Sines, to use the Law of Cosines, to use trigonometric identities, to handle imaginary numbers, to complete the perfect square, and to find zeros of polynomials. As for my knowledge of Calculus, I know how to take derivatives; to change formulas for volumes and surface areas to equations that concern rates of increases and decreases in volumes, surface areas, and radii; to find maximums and minimums of the graphs of polynomial functions; to find limits of functions; to integrate expressions by parts; to find areas under curves; and to find volumes of solids of revolutions by integration. As for tutoring either ASL or math, I can prepare tutees for quizzes, tests, and final exams. I can work hard to make sure that these tutees get grades of A. Please consider me as a tutor. For this reason, it is hard to learn from books or flashcards alone while studying ASL. Because of my effort to tutor ASL, tutees can see ASL in three dimensions (3-D) from me instead of ASL in two dimensions (2-D), which are featured on either books or flashcards. In fact, ASL in 3-D is normal to use to talk as opposed to ASL in 2-D. Please do not wait to contact me until you start to have trouble with ASL or math. I can respond to your needs quickly. I repeat that you should not wait to contact me until you start to have trouble with ASL or math; otherwise, it may be hard to undo mistakes that you have made. I highly recommend that you communicate all of your needs with me before or at the beginnings of your courses. In fact, I am open to any time except late nights when you seek tutoring from me. I look forward to working as an outstanding tutor.

Hobbies

I can communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) with anyone interested in me for hobbies. I enjoy helping people. For example, I can advise on how to be successful on the job. For another example, I can escort people to their destinations in a library. I enjoy preparing top-rated meals. I always seek new recipes that are based on various cuisines. So far, I have prepared Scottish dishes, Hungarian dishes, and other dishes of various nationalities. I enjoy building models of starships. I use pieces of cardboard, watercolor paints, and other construction materials in construction of these models. I make sure that the models are technically feasible in accordance with canons. I enjoy leading. For example, I ask for ideas from my members. I make these ideas become realities. I enjoy exploring opportunities. For this reason, I believe that I should be not limited to opportunities that I have so that I can create new opportunities.
